EA is closing down the Origin PC client, and players with software past a certain age will be unable to play their games when it’s gone. EA is telling players on both Microsoft and Apple products that they will need to move to the EA App later this year, but if your PC isn’t modern enough then you may be forced into an upgrade. Many who use the Origin client will be fine, but the lack of support for older software means others will lose access to their game library.
EA, which owns the likes of Battlefield, The Sims 4, Mass Effect, and myriad sports games, is about to shut down its Origin launcher. This means existing users are being forced to migrate to the EA App – but this will leave some out in the cold. That’s because the EA App doesn’t support 32-bit Windows or older versions of Apple’s operating system.
“On April 17 2025, Origin will shut down, as Apple [and Microsoft] has stopped supporting 32-bit software,” EA writes across its support pages. “If you use Origin, you’ll need to upgrade to the EA app, which requires macOS Catalina 10.15.5 [or a 64-bit version of Windows] or later.”

The imminent closure of Origin means that any users with 32-bit desktop software will need to upgrade their PC. That’s because the EA App only runs on a 64-bit version of Windows. As for Mac users, it’s worth checking on Catalina’s compatibility with different Apple hardware, and identifying yours to see if it can run the EA App.
If you can’t upgrade from 32 to 64-bit, or your Apple hardware can’t update past Cataline 10.15.5, you’re out of luck. Your computer will need to use the EA App as of later this year, but it can’t.
EA does clarify that account and game data transfers between Origin and the EA App, however – you don’t lose your game purchases, but if your PC is not compatible with the EA App, you won’t be able to access your games. EA also says that it cannot promise that any mods you use will work after the switch from Origin.
EA is closing Origin on Thursday April 17, 2025. Users will need to switch to the EA App, which doesn’t support 32-bit software or macOS older than Catalina 10.15.5.
